Do I need a web developer?
No. If you can paste one line into your website, you can add Ernie. There are step-by-step guides for WordPress, Shopify, Wix, Squarespace, Weebly / Square Online, Webflow and Framer, and one for everything else. Or email the instructions to whoever looks after your website, straight from the app.
Can I see what Ernie tells my customers?
Yes. Every chat is in the app under Chats, word for word, with any photos. If you’d answer something differently, correct Ernie’s answer there and it follows your version from then on.
What does Ernie say when someone asks for a price?
If your website lists prices, Ernie answers from them. If it doesn’t, Ernie says so and offers to pass the visitor’s enquiry to you for a quote. It’s told never to make up a price or promise a booking, price or time on your behalf.
What if Ernie gets something wrong?
Ernie answers only from your website. When your website doesn’t say, Ernie tells the visitor and gives your phone number, email or contact page. It can still get things wrong: in our September testing, 5 of 96 answers had a mistake. The chat tells visitors it can make mistakes, and nothing reaches you until they’ve checked the details and pressed Send. If an answer’s off, fix the page on your website and press Sync now.
Will my customers know it’s not me?
Yes. The top of every chat tells visitors you use AI to answer from your website.
Will Ernie open by itself on my website?
No. Ernie stays closed until a visitor taps it, with a short greeting after a few seconds. On computers you can have it open when visitors arrive by turning on Open Ernie on computers.
Will Ernie slow down my website?
No. Ernie loads after the rest of your page, so your page doesn’t wait for it. It sits in its own space and doesn’t change how the rest of your website looks.
Is my customers’ information used to train AI?
No. We don’t use chats or enquiries to train AI, and neither do the AI companies that write Ernie’s replies. Our privacy policy has the details. If your website has a privacy policy, add a paragraph saying you use Ernie. There’s one ready to copy on the Install page in the app.
When does the trial start, and what happens after?
When Ernie goes live on your website, not when you sign up, so time spent setting up doesn’t count. It’s 14 days and there’s no card to enter. To keep Ernie on your website after that, choose a plan. If you don’t, the chat stops showing and there’s nothing to pay.
What happens if I run out of chats?
You’ll get a heads-up at 50%, 80% and 100% of your month’s chats. If you run out, the chat stops appearing for new visitors until next month, or until you move up a plan. Only chats your customers start count.
